The Brief

"One critical topic included in the OECD’s data is the economic return on education, both for the individual and the society at large. How much does it cost a country to educate a citizen with a higher degree? What are the various returns on that investment? The OECD has developed a sophisticated set of indicators for measuring these costs and returns, refined and updated in the just-released Education at a Glance 2012 report. Broken down by gender, public/private value, and secondary/tertiary education level, and including all 34 OECD countries, this data set offers a comprehensive view of the economic return on education."

"Your challenge is to visualize the economic costs and returns on education. Your design should encourage comparison across the countries, and should reveal the individual statistics that go into these indicators. Additional education or economic data from the Education at a Glance or other OECD publications may also be included."

Apparition (Kinetic New Media Installation)

Apparition is a kinetic new media installation designed to exploit the fictitious and deceptive nature of video as a medium. The piece was produced as my final major project while at the University for the Creative Arts.

The kinetic art installation uses 30 servos, each of which moves to it’s own ‘random’ function, set in Arduino. This means it is extremely unlikely that the movement would repeat the same pattern .

The surfaces movement is used to distort a digital projection. (see video)

Dead Sleep (Short Film)

A piece designed to be part of a video installation. The installation inspired by the work of Janet Cardiff', namely 'The Killing Machine'. The scene portrayed in this film, is a perception of a chapter in the book 'Dead Sleep' by Greg Iles. With much of my inspiration coming from 'A Clock Work Orange', Doug Foster's 'In the Naughty Chair' (exhibition), 'Pans Labyrinth' and the title sequence from the television series 'Dexter'.
